The Cognitive Science & AI department performs computational research in the domains of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science and runs educational programs on Cognitive Science & AI and Data Science and Society. The department is partially housed on Tilburg University campus (Dante Building) and in the Deprez building (near Tilburg central station) as member of Mind Labs. We maintain a close collaboration with the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
The four foundations of the Cognitive Science & AI department:
- Computational models are fundamental to research in the cognitive sciences; computational skills (have) become fundamental to most professions. CS&AI thereby distinguishes itself from all other departments and research programs at Tilburg University, by developing computational models, and focusing on data science and artificial intelligence;
- Research in cognitive science and artificial intelligence should be constructed along the methodologies exemplified by computer science and artificial intelligence instead of those in communication studies and cultural studies. Quantitative research rather than qualitative research lies at the heart of the program; computational models complementary to psychological experiments are the focus; artificial intelligence and data science are the forces pushing the program;
- Research and education are intrinsically related, with research-based learning being central in the curriculum. Students are considered young researchers;
- Corporate partnerships strengthen both research and education, and combines fundamental research with societal relevance. Such corporate partnerships are not accidental, but are sought actively in the program’s scientific research and initiatives.
We are member of the Benelux Association for Artificial Intelligence (BNVKI), participate in the Special Interest Group for AI (SIG AI), contributed to the Dutch AI Manifesto , and participate in the Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe (CLAIRE).
